2018 Bicycle Safety Class

by Shirley Harriman

Parks after Dark (PAD) Sorensen Park Lake Los Angeles -December 22, 2018

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) provided our Park with their Bicycle Safety Class that is so popular. Presenter was Alan Arce who is Director of School Age Grants for Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH). Sixteen children attended as they went through the drills of standing in straight lines, walking slow, no pushing, no running and learning about traffic lights.

The children learned how to properly and safely fit a helmet, be aware signs, green/walk, yellow/slow down and red/STOP. The emphasis was on being safe while walking or on a bike, including having a light on your bike and reflective attachments on the wheels.

The parents participated in a survey from DPH "Vision Zero" in both English and Spanish. Traffic-related deaths are the fifth leading cause of premature death in Los Angeles County. In an effort to create safe streets and promote active lifestyles, the Board of Supervisors voted to approve a motion by Chair Hilda L. Solis to implement a “Vision Zero Initiative” that would identify potential strategies to help eliminate traffic-related fatalities.

During the Bicycle Safety class one smaller and one larger bike was raffled off. One bike went to Ashley Alcantar, Ashley moved from LLA and now attends Alpine School but came back to support the Chalk Festival and other activities at the Park. Congratulations Ashley seen here with her proud brother Jorge.

Winning the smaller bike at the Bicycle Safety Class was Anastasia Schultz who was stunned that she won. It took a few minutes for her to take in the surprise. With Anastasia is the instructor Allan Arce, Director of the School Age Department Grants for Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH).

2018 Parents Night Out

by Shirley Harriman

Over 100 kids had their night out also during Parents' Night out at the Park. They enjoyed reading, crafts, gingerbread house building, ornament creating and a movie Norm of the North.

The kids' parties started at 4:00pm and lasted until after 10:00pm. Each child received a book to take home. Nachos, hot dogs and cocoa were served.

Here is Samantha Cook with her 3-D Christmas Tree master sample (left photo) the children duplicated at crafts with the help of volunteer Janet Backe. And, here is the winning gingerbread house (right photo), The ladies of Lake Los Angeles Family Group (NAC) made cut outs for the kids to build their houses.

During the gingerbread house project, the kids cleaned their tables and the judging began. Each one of the kids at the table who worked together on their winning house got to chose a prize.

And it was called "Parents" Night Out? It was more like Kids' Night Out!

Thank you to the volunteers who helped to make this happen!
